Little explicit detail on how to use the pictures of picture books to increase learning. For example it says: Pictures can help increase vocabulary but it does not say “by looking at the pictures together with your students and asking them to describe what they see or by asking questions about the pictures, pictures help to increase vocabulary. A little more detail may have been useful. Some of the links to lists of good picture books no longer work or have a strong bias to a certain context.

Using the Language Experience Approach

This online article provides the background of the Language Experience Approach and how to use learners' own words to generate a text which can then be used to teach literacy (to young learners and adults alike.) This is a teaching methodology which requires a bit of flexibility when working with groups. As you are generating the text as you go, you cannot know exactly how the text will read but you can set the context or theme and predict as much as possible.

User comments: Positive Experiences

Using your learners words to generate a text for literacy is a powerful and empowering way to give ownership to learning. Further, for learners whom English is a second language, it can be rewarding to see how much they know in the target language. As the Language Experience Approach generates a text from a learner or small group, it is already contextualised and localised for the individual or group.

User comments: Pros

It informs well that illustrations engage children in picture books.

Phase one is easy and useful to contextualize and localize. The other phases are more difficult to "translate" to a non English context, yet some exercises and approaches may still be useful.

User comments: Pros

Phase 1 ensures a nice foundation in phonics. Exercises of phase one have been adapted in some Zambian (pre-)primary Schools. The document has also inspired teacher trainers in 2 colleges of Education in Zambia linked to low-cost resources. There are many resource sites that offer free, downloadable materials related to the activities, like http://www.sparklebox.co.uk/.

Using the Language Experience Approach

This online article provides the background of the Language Experience Approach and how to use learners' own words to generate a text which can then be used to teach literacy (to young learners and adults alike.) The resource links to videos which demonstrate the LEA in action. Further, there are a list of resources for additional reading.

This is a teaching methodology which requires a bit of flexibility when working with groups. As you are generating the text as you go, you cannot know exactly how the text will read but you can set the context or theme and predict as much as possible.

User comments: Pros

Using your learners words to generate a text for literacy is a powerful and empowering way to give ownership to learning. Further, for learners whom English is a second language, it can be rewarding to see how much they know in the target language. As the Language Experience Approach generates a text from a learner or small group, it is already contextualised and localised for the individual or group. The Professional Learning blog is an helpful associated resource: https://k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com/tlb/understanding-the-language-experience-approach-lea/.
